I have it—you want it! SimpliShade, GINGICaine, and Adhese Universal DC

Aug. 15, 2023
In this popular bimonthly feature, Dr. Glazer gives a quick review of three dental products on the market today.

SimpliShade

(pictured above)

Shade selection can often be a challenge—even more so when trying to match adjacent composite restorations. SimpliShade may be the solution you are looking for when having difficulty choosing the correct shade for your composite restoration. This universal composite material features three shades that cover the 16 Vita Classical shades: Light = A1, B1, B2, C1 and D2; Medium = A2, A3, C2, D3, and D4; Dark = A3.5, A4, B3, B4, C3, and C4.

Including a blend of shades increases the likelihood of matching the adjacent teeth. Kerr’s SimpliShade is available in both unit-dose and syringe formats, and is powered by ART (adaptive response technology), which is also in Harmonize and provides highly esthetic and strong, long-lasting restorations in all cavity classes. The material is photocured and handles quite nicely while polishing to a high luster. Typically, I apply it in 1 to 2 mm increments. It is cost effective since you no longer have to stock so many shades.

GINGICaine Syringe

I remember an instructor in the oral surgery clinic proclaiming, “A happy patient is a numb patient!” I must say, I do agree that patient comfort is very important. Toward that end, I did not find it surprising that the manufacturer of a great topical anesthetic in a jar would be able to offer it in a syringe format that can easily be applied around and into the sulcus for direct topical anesthesia.

The GINGICaine 1.2 ml syringe allows the dentist or hygienist (where allowed by state law) to apply the medicament directly where it is most needed. Whether as a prelude to an infiltration injection or for scaling and root planing, the proprietary 7 mm gauge syringe tip, with its rounded end, allows for placement of the gel without risk of poking or tearing sulcular tissue. This is ideal in single-tooth or quadrant applications.

GINGICaine is a strawberry flavored, 20% benzocaine formulation with a quick 15- to 20-second onset and has about a 30-minute duration. Each syringe can easily handle a full upper or lower arch application. It is supplied in 20 syringe packages and is a quick and easy method for alleviating patient discomfort with a pleasant-tasting smooth gel that does not run or drip. Another great solution from Gingi-Pak!

Adhese Universal DC

The Adhese Universal Viva Pen has proven to be an ideal dispensing system for direct restorations, and the bonding resin provides a high bond strength. The new Adhese Universal DC (dual cure) has the same great bond strengths in a newly designed packaging that is most suitable for bonding indirect restorations (such as those created with Variolink Esthetic DC), where self-curing is of value.

Adhese Universal DC is particularly valuable for use in bonding root canal posts as well as cementing all restorations. Adhese Universal DC is compatible with all selective and total etch techniques and both direct and indirect restorations. Bond strengths exceed 25 MPa on moist and dry dentin. An added value is its desensitizing capability.

The unit dose system provides for a stable well containing the adhesive and an applicator brush that contains the initiator. The brush is available in two sizes: regular for cavity and crown preparations and small, which is ideal for endodontic canals (bonding in fiber posts) and smaller (micropreparation) cavities. Ivoclar has again provided another fine product for predictable, strong adhesion with easy application.
