Perimetrics/InnerView: AI device for assessing tooth structure and implant health

AI and machine learning can be powerful tools in helping us to identify cracked teeth, damaged fillings, and the severity of individual tooth mobility—or mobility of implants—via proprietary Quantitative Percussion Diagnostics (QPD).

The InnerView System, developed by Perimetrics, is a real-time tool that will enhance our clinical capabilities in the short and long terms. This lightweight, wireless, handheld device provides painless, 2.5 millisecond taps to the tooth or implant that collects and records vital insight through energy feedback waves created by the taps. The information is quantified and displayed on a dashboard used to assist in making informed decisions about treatment based on data about the structural integrity of the teeth and implants tested. Data is archived and can be graphed over designated periods of time, tooth-by-tooth, to establish critical trend lines of structural stability changes. Infection control is ensured with sleeves for the device and disposable, single-use smart chip-enabled tips that prevent any cross contamination between patients.

InnerView has over 29 peer-reviewed clinical studies that have scientifically validated the viability of the instrument and the data collection. I have found it easy to use and the technical support, when and if needed, to be outstanding. Undoubtedly, AI is here to stay and the Perimetrics system will prove to be a valuable tool in determining both treatment and outcomes.

Philips Cordless Power Flosser

At the risk of belaboring a point we are all aware of, flossing is not fun. In fact, many patients feel it is difficult to do given the amount of manual dexterity needed to adequately clean between their teeth. However, some patients now tell me flossing with the Philips Cordless Power Flosser can be fun!

This device, featuring Pulse Wave Technology, is ergonomic, lightweight, and battery powered. It also features Quad Stream Technology, which means it has four wide streams of water that allow for deep penetration between the teeth and up to approximately 6 mm below the gumline for enhanced removal of food and calculus. I particularly like to use it in the shower on the Clean mode setting, whereby the 8-ounce water reservoir can easily be refilled while showering.

Studies have shown that the Sonicare Water Flosser is approximately 150% more effective than floss in improving gingival health and removes up to 99% of plaque from below the gumline.1 Periodontal health is a key to overall health, and this device is easy to use and successful in helping achieve that goal.

Maxcem Elite Chroma Universal Resin Cement

I like simple solutions—especially when it comes to cementation for the many different materials and treatments we utilize in daily practice. Kerr's Maxcem Elite Chroma Cement offers us the winning combination of easy, self-adhesive cementing with the surety of an adhesive resin cement that can be combined with a universal bonding agent.

This is a strong self-etch, self-adhesive cement that works in both wet and dry environments. It can also be used with all dental substrates and indirect restorations including anterior/posterior ceramic inlays, onlays, veneers and crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal, metal, CAD/CAM materials, and restoration posts and implant abutments. I really like the one-peel technology that makes it easier to know when to initiate cleanup, as it dispenses pink prior to fading at the gel state; this indicates the optimal time to clean up the excess cement. Add that to the benefits of an automix cement that requires no refrigeration, and you end up with an easier, consistent cementation outcome for all indirect restorations—including self-cure, light-cure, or dual-cure.
