I have it—you want it! TheraBase

June 1, 2021
In this bimonthly column, Dr. Howard Glazer reviews a promising new product or material to hit the dental industry. In this installment, learn more about TheraBase from Bisco.

Bisco has always been well known for outstanding products such as Theracal, Theracal LC, and Theracal PT, which are designed to protect the pulp in areas of deep decay as well as indirect and direct pulp-capping procedures. Now we have TheraBase, which, in simplest terms, is a self-adhesive, calcium-releasing base/liner. Not only does it continuously release calcium ions, it also releases fluoride ions, which work together to promote a more alkaline pH and pulp vitality in a proprietary hydrophilic matrix.

This highly radiopaque material provides high flexural strength, making it more durable and more fracture resistant. Thus, the high compressive strength absorbs the shock and stress of mastication under the restoration. TheraBase is an auto-mix, dual-syringe material that is self-adhesive and dual cure. In the deepest of cavity preps, this product will still cure, even if your light does not directly reach the material. Bisco has included methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) in the formulation, which promotes adhesion and helps to ensure a strong bond to dentin. In instances when you have a direct or indirect pulpal exposure, it is suggested that you first place a layer of Theracal LC as a liner, then apply TheraBase. Kudos to Bisco for this excellent addition to this family of products!
