What is the DEXIS CariVu?
DEXIS CariVu is a compact, portable caries detection device that uses patented transillumination technology to support the identification of occlusal, interproximal, and recurrent carious lesions and cracks.
How does it work?
CariVu hugs the tooth, bathing it in safe, near-infrared light. This technology makes the enamel appear transparent while porous lesions trap and absorb the light. This essentially allows the clinician to see through the tooth, exposing its structure and the actual structure of any carious lesions with very high accuracy.
What differentiates it from other caries detection devices?
CariVu is the only detector on the market that detects it all: occlusal, interproximal, and recurrent caries and cracks. It does so using images rather than colors, codes, or sounds. There is no need to clean the tooth surface or calibrate the unit before using.
Is it easy to use?
CariVu is very easy to use. Simply slide the CariVu tip over the occlusal surface to see live video. Still images can then be captured. The images are automatically displayed, comparing any intraoral camera images or radiographs within the software. CariVu provides easy-to-read images that read like familiar X-ray images-lesions will appear as dark areas.
How accurate?
CariVu has been shown to be 99% accurate in detection of interproximal caries (1) and can often detect caries sooner than on radiographs. (2)
What is the cost comparison between the CariVu and other devices?
CariVu is comparable to other caries detection devices. However, it is not limited to only detection on occlusal, virgin teeth. It is also helpful in a multitude of diagnostic situations, that is, interproximal and recurrent decay, and also fractures.
Why should a general dentist invest in something like this product?
Caries detection gives dentists another level of diagnostics that can benefit their patients. CariVu images can easily be used for patient education and to maintain a historical record of the patient's oral health. This system lets dentists provide an alternative in diagnostics for patients who cannot have or do not want radiographs.
